mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantraḥ

A single Vedic verse addressed to Tryambaka, the three-eyed Shiva, praying that he loosen the bonds of death as a ripe cucumber is freed from its stem, yet leave immortality untouched. Among the most revered of all healing mantras, it is repeated in japa, often in rounds of one hundred and eight, for recovery from illness, long life, and protection from untimely death.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam |urvārukamiva bandhanānmṛtyormukṣīya mā'mṛtāt ||

Om, we worship the three-eyed one (Shiva), the fragrant nourisher of all. As a ripe cucumber is freed from its stem, may he liberate us from death, not from immortality.

हिन्दी अर्थ

ॐ, हम त्रिनेत्र (शिव) की उपासना करते हैं, जो सुगन्धित और सबका पोषण करने वाले हैं। जैसे पका खरबूज़ा अपने डंठल से मुक्त होता है, वैसे ही वे हमें मृत्यु से मुक्त करें, अमृतत्व से नहीं।
