śrīsūktam
One of the most widely recited Vedic hymns to Lakshmi (Shri), invoking the goddess of prosperity, beauty and abundance through Agni (Jatavedas), and praying for the removal of Alakshmi (misfortune). It is the core of every Lakshmi puja and is chanted especially on Fridays and at Diwali.

hiraṇyavarṇāṃ hariṇīṃ suvarṇarajatasrajām |candrāṃ hiraṇmayīṃ lakṣmīṃ jātavedo ma āvaha || 1||
O Jatavedas (Agni), invoke for me that Lakshmi, golden-hued, tawny like a deer, wearing garlands of gold and silver, lustrous as the moon, fashioned of gold.

तां म॒ आव॑ह॒ जात॑वेदो ल॒क्ष्मीमन॑पगा॒मिनी᳚म् ।यस्यां॒ हिर॑ण्यं वि॒न्देयं॒ गामश्वं॒ पुरु॑षान॒हम् ॥ २॥
tāṃ ma āvaha jātavedo lakṣmīmanapagāminīm |yasyāṃ hiraṇyaṃ vindeyaṃ gāmaśvaṃ puruṣānaham || 2||
O Jatavedas, invoke for me that Lakshmi who never forsakes, by whose grace I may win gold, cattle, horses and people.

हे जातवेदस्, मेरे लिए उस लक्ष्मी का आवाहन करो जो कभी दूर नहीं होती (अविचल है), जिसकी कृपा से मैं स्वर्ण, गौ, अश्व और सेवक-पुरुषों को प्राप्त करूँ।

aśvapūrvāṃ rathamadhyāṃ hastinādaprabodhinīm |śriyaṃ devīmupahvaye śrīrmādevīrjuṣatām || 3||
I invoke the goddess Shri, preceded by horses, seated amid chariots, awakened by the trumpeting of elephants. May the goddess Shri take delight in me.

अश्वों से अग्रगामी, रथों के मध्य विराजमान, हाथियों की गर्जना से जागृत होने वाली देवी श्री का मैं आवाहन करता हूँ। वह श्री देवी मुझ पर प्रसन्न हों।

मन्द मुस्कान वाली, स्वर्ण के परकोटे (आभा) से युक्त, आर्द्र (दयार्द्र), देदीप्यमान, तृप्त और तृप्त करने वाली, कमल पर स्थित और कमल के समान वर्ण वाली, उस श्री का मैं यहाँ आवाहन करता हूँ।
च॒न्द्रां प्र॑भा॒सां य॒शसा॒ ज्वल॑न्तीं॒ श्रियं॑ लो॒के दे॒वजु॑ष्टामुदा॒राम् ।तां प॒द्मिनी॑मीं॒ शर॑णम॒हं प्रप॑द्येऽल॒क्ष्मीर्मे॑ नश्यतां॒ त्वां वृ॑णे ॥ ५॥
candrāṃ prabhāsāṃ yaśasā jvalantīṃ śriyaṃ loke devajuṣṭāmudārām |tāṃ padminīmīṃ śaraṇamahaṃ prapadye'lakṣmīrme naśyatāṃ tvāṃ vṛṇe || 5||
Radiant as the moon, shining, blazing with glory, adored by the gods in the world and generous, to that lotus-dwelling Shri I turn for refuge. May misfortune perish; you I choose.

चन्द्रमा के समान, प्रभायुक्त, यश से देदीप्यमान, लोक में देवताओं द्वारा सेवित और उदार उस श्री की मैं शरण ग्रहण करता हूँ। मेरी अलक्ष्मी (दरिद्रता) नष्ट हो; मैं तुम्हीं का वरण करता हूँ।
आ॒दि॒त्यव॑र्णे॒ तप॒सोऽधि॑जा॒तो वन॒स्पति॒स्तव॑ वृ॒क्षोऽथ बि॒ल्वः ।तस्य॒ फला᳚नि॒ तप॒सा नु॑दन्तु मा॒यान्त॑रा॒याश्च॑ बा॒ह्या अ॑ल॒क्ष्मीः ॥ ६॥
ādityavarṇe tapaso'dhijāto vanaspatistava vṛkṣo'tha bilvaḥ |tasya phalāni tapasā nudantu māyāntarāyāśca bāhyā alakṣmīḥ || 6||
O sun-hued one, born of your tapas is the tree, the bilva. May its fruits, by that tapas, drive away the inner illusions and the outer misfortunes.

हे सूर्य के समान वर्ण वाली, तुम्हारे तप से वनस्पति-वृक्ष बिल्व उत्पन्न हुआ। उसके फल अपने तप से मेरी भीतरी (मानसिक) मायाओं और बाहरी अलक्ष्मी (विघ्नों) को दूर करें।
उपै॑तु॒ मां दे॑वस॒खः की॒र्तिश्च॒ मणि॑ना स॒ह ।प्रा॒दु॒र्भू॒तोऽस्मि॑ राष्ट्रे॒ऽस्मिन् की॒र्तिमृ॑द्धिं द॒दातु॑ मे ॥ ७॥
upaitu māṃ devasakhaḥ kīrtiśca maṇinā saha |prādurbhūto'smi rāṣṭre'smin kīrtimṛddhiṃ dadātu me || 7||
May Kubera, friend of the gods, come to me together with fame and the jewel. I am born into this realm; may he grant me renown and prosperity.

क्षुत्पि॑पा॒साम॑लां ज्ये॒ष्ठाम॑ल॒क्ष्मीं ना॑शया॒म्यहम् ।अभू॑ति॒मस॑मृद्धिं॒ च सर्वां॒ निर्णु॑द मे॒ गृहा᳚त् ॥ ८॥
kṣutpipāsāmalāṃ jyeṣṭhāmalakṣmīṃ nāśayāmyaham |abhūtimasamṛddhiṃ ca sarvāṃ nirṇuda me gṛhāt || 8||
Hunger and thirst, the impure elder Alakshmi (misfortune), her I destroy. Drive away all want and ill-success from my house.

भूख-प्यास रूपी मलिन, ज्येष्ठा अलक्ष्मी (दरिद्रता की देवी) का मैं नाश करता हूँ। हे लक्ष्मी, मेरे घर से समस्त अभाव और असमृद्धि को दूर कर दो।
गं॒ध॒द्वा॒रां दु॑राध॒र्षां॒ नि॒त्यपु॑ष्टां करी॒षिणी᳚म् ।ई॒श्वरी॑ꣳ सर्व॑भूता॒नां॒ तामि॒होप॑ह्वये॒ श्रियम् ॥ ९॥
gaṃdhadvārāṃ durādharṣāṃ nityapuṣṭāṃ karīṣiṇīm |īśvarīṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ tāmihopahvaye śriyam || 9||
Known through fragrance, unassailable, ever-nourished, abounding in plenty, the sovereign of all beings, that Shri I invoke here.

सुगन्ध से जानी जाने वाली (गन्ध के द्वार वाली पृथ्वी रूपा), दुर्धर्ष, नित्य पुष्ट, गोबर (समृद्धि) से युक्त, समस्त प्राणियों की ईश्वरी, उस श्री का मैं यहाँ आवाहन करता हूँ।
मन॑सः॒ काम॒माकू᳚तिं वा॒चः स॒त्यम॑शीमहि ।प॒शू॒नां रू॒पमन्न॑स्य॒ मयि॒ श्रीः श्र॑यतां॒ यशः॑ ॥ १०॥
manasaḥ kāmamākūtiṃ vācaḥ satyamaśīmahi |paśūnāṃ rūpamannasya mayi śrīḥ śrayatāṃ yaśaḥ || 10||
May we attain the heart’s desire and resolve, and the truth of speech; the form (abundance) of cattle and of food. May Shri and glory abide in me.

हम मन की कामना और संकल्प को तथा वाणी के सत्य को प्राप्त करें; पशुओं और अन्न की समृद्धि प्राप्त करें। मुझमें श्री और यश का निवास हो।
क॒र्दमे॑न प्र॑जाभू॒ता॒ म॒यि॒ सम्भ॑व क॒र्दम ।श्रियं॑ वा॒सय॑ मे कु॒ले मा॒तरं॑ पद्म॒मालि॑नीम् ॥ ११॥
kardamena prajābhūtā mayi sambhava kardama |śriyaṃ vāsaya me kule mātaraṃ padmamālinīm || 11||
O Kardama, by you (her son) Shri has offspring. Dwell in me, O Kardama; settle in my line the lotus-garlanded Mother, Shri.

हे कर्दम, तुम्हारे द्वारा श्री सन्तानवती हुईं। हे कर्दम, मुझमें निवास करो; कमल की माला धारण करने वाली माता श्री को मेरे कुल में बसाओ।
आपः॑ सृ॒जन्तु॑ स्नि॒ग्धा॒नि॒ चि॒क्ली॒त व॑स मे॒ गृहे ।नि च॑ दे॒वीं मा॒तरं॒ श्रियं॑ वा॒सय॑ मे कु॒ले ॥ १२॥
āpaḥ sṛjantu snigdhāni ciklīta vasa me gṛhe |ni ca devīṃ mātaraṃ śriyaṃ vāsaya me kule || 12||
May the waters bring forth what is rich and smooth. O Chiklita (her son), dwell in my house; and settle the divine Mother Shri in my line.
